Job description
Potchefstroom Academy is seeking a passionate, dynamic, and innovative Photography Lecturer to join its expanding creative faculty. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality teaching, training, and mentorship within photography and the broader digital media environment. This includes still and motion photography, videography, digital editing, post-production, and creative entrepreneurship.The role involves integrating contemporary digital practices into the curriculum, ensuring that students are equipped with both technical expertise and industry-relevant entrepreneurial skills to thrive in the fast-evolving visual media sector. The lecturer will guide students in becoming creative leaders who can merge artistic vision with business acumen in the fields of photography, videography, and digital content creation.
Duties include teaching, assessment, curriculum design and review, academic support, and administrative responsibilities aligned with institutional and accreditation requirements. The lecturer will also be expected to contribute to departmental strategy, innovation, and leadership — helping position the photography department as one of the most creative and forward-thinking schools in South Africa.
The successful candidate may also be required to facilitate short courses and workshops after hours as part of the Academy’s Extended Learning and Continuing Education Initiatives.
Minimum requirements
- A recognised diploma or degree in photography or visual communication (minimum NQF Level 7)
- At least two years of relevant industry experience in photography, videography, or multimedia production
- Strong proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite, including Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro, and After Effects
- Solid understanding of graphic design principles, video editing, and motion graphics
- Demonstrated experience with studio equipment, lighting systems, digital cameras (for still and motion), and other professional imaging technology
- Assessor and/or Moderator registration will be an advantage
- Bilingual (Afrikaans and English) with excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Entrepreneurial experience or demonstrated understanding of the business side of creative media will be advantageous
Key responsibilities
- Deliver engaging lectures, tutorials, and practical sessions in photography, videography, and related digital media subjects
- Guide students through both technical and conceptual development, preparing them for the realities of the creative industry
- Integrate the use of modern software tools and equipment, ensuring students are industry-ready
- Supervise student projects, exhibitions, and portfolios aligned with academic and industry standards
- Participate in curriculum innovation, ensuring alignment with technological advances and entrepreneurial opportunities in the creative sector
- Maintain accurate academic and administrative records
- Engage in continuous professional development, staying current with new trends, tools, and pedagogical approaches in photography, videography, and digital design
- Provide academic mentorship and support to students, promoting personal growth and creative confidence
- Lead by example in fostering a positive, inclusive, and professional departmental culture
