The occupational therapist will play a vital role in assessing, planning, and implementing therapeutic interventions that support residents in maintaining or improving their functional abilities. This includes mobility, self-care, cognitive function, engagement in meaningful activities tailored to the needs of frail adults, and providing caregiver education.
Key performance areas
- Conduct comprehensive assessments of residents’ physical, and psychosocial
- Develop individualised treatment plans focused on enhancing independence to
- Improve quality of life.
- Implement therapeutic activities to improve mobility, coordination, and daily living
- Collaborate with nursing staff, physiotherapists, social workers, and family members.
- Recommend and facilitate the use of adaptive equipment and environmental
- Monitor progress and adjust interventions as needed.
- Provide training and support to caregivers and staff on safe handling and therapeutic techniques.
- Maintain accurate and confidential documentation in line with regulatory standards.
- Participate in multi-disciplinary care planning meetings and contribute to case reviews.
- Promote resident engagement through individual and group therapy sessions and

- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in occupational therapy from an accredited institution.
- Registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).
- A minimum of 2 to 3 years of experience in geriatric care, rehabilitation, or frail care settings.
- Experience with dementia care, stroke rehabilitation, and chronic illness management is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of assistive devices, fall prevention strategies, and sensory stimulation techniques.
- Familiarity with electronic health records and care documentation systems.
